Use of antibiotics in livestock production

The ICCR coalition has invited Etica Sgr to join a campaign calling on ten of the largest fast food and restaurant chains to adopt and implement policies on reducing the use of antibiotics in livestock production. The aim of ICCR is to encourage these companies to phase out – and eventually completely eliminate – the use of antibiotics throughout their supply chain. The alarming statistics on the use of antibiotics make it clear that it is time to act: half of the antibiotics in the United Kingdom are used on farm animals, with the figure rising to about 80% in the United States. The World Health Organization has sounded the alarm about a growing global emergency due to the overuse of antibiotics, which can actually have the opposite effect and threaten the health of both animals and humans. Indeed, the overuse of antibiotics in livestock production has become a serious public health issue, as it could lead to dangerous infections such as MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus).

Etica Sgr has decided to support this initiative by signing the letter sent to Darden Restaurant, the only company that is in Etica Sgr’s Investable Universe.
