Cotton Campaign – Uzbekistan

In line with what has been done since 2007, on 26 September 2014 Etica SGR joined the “Cotton” campaign to raise the awareness of the Uzbek government and to ask it to stop the incessant human rights violations of both children and adults. The campaign was promoted by various organisations for the defence of human rights and is aimed at stopping the use of forced labour and child labour resulting from the government’s decision to mobilise millions of citizens to participate in the harvest of state cotton. In particular, in 2014 the government mobilised more teachers, healthcare and other public sector workers than ever.

A report by the United States Department of Labor emphasises the complicity of the Uzbek government in the use of forced labour and child labour for the cotton harvest, despite the presence of ILO controllers and observers in the plantations.
