Human Rights In Burma

In November 2012 Etica Sgr sent, together with 14 other members of the ICCR and PRI, a letter to the Chairman of the European Union’s International Trade Committee, containing some specific requests for European companies operating in Burma, where, despite improvements occurring from the perspective of human rights over recent years, there are still significant social criticalities.

In particular, it was proposed that European companies should be obligated, by way of specific policies, to monitor observance of human rights at their plants located in Burma and to publicly report on the results of such controls: the monitoring activity should also be extended to the supply chain. The investors also asked the European Union to create a special community body to allow Burmese citizens to report any type of human rights violation by companies operating in the country.

To date, the European Union has not responded to this letter.
