Until now, there has not been a standard definition at international or European level. But now there is, or almost. The word <strong>\u201cTaxonomy\u201d<\/strong> has been bandied about a lot. Let\u2019s take a look at its definition and what it means.<\/p>\n<p>On 9 March 2020, the <a href=\"https:\/\/valori.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/200309-sustainable-finance-teg-final-report-taxonomy_en.pdf\"><strong>Final Report<\/strong><\/a><strong> on the EU Taxonomy of sustainable economic activities<\/strong> was published, the result of over a year of work by the&nbsp;<strong>Technical Expert Group on Sustainable Finance (TEG)<\/strong> \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/files\/sustainable-finance-teg-members_en\"><strong>35 members<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;and over 100 consultants \u2013 appointed by the European Commission to provide recommendations on the new sustainable finance regulations.<\/p>\n<p>The TEG was tasked with <strong>identifying the economic activities able to contribute to and achieve the target of zero emissions by 2050 and the relative selection criteria<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The document is entitled <strong>\u201cTaxonomy: Final report of the Technical Expert Group on Sustainable Finance\u201d<\/strong>. This document, consisting of 67 pages and 600 technical annexes, seeks to classify the main economic sectors (70) based on their capacity to mitigate or adapt to climate change: those that are already environmentally sustainable (<strong>low carbon<\/strong>), those that pollute but cannot do otherwise and which are called upon to do as much as possible to improve (<strong>transition<\/strong> to a zero-emissions economy but which cannot yet be called zero carbon), and those that contribute to the other categories (<strong>enabling<\/strong>) which allow other activities to achieve low carbon performance or to significantly reduce their emissions.
