{"id":34309,"date":"2020-11-05T18:33:48","date_gmt":"2020-11-05T16:33:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eticasgr.com\/storie\/news-events\/inquinamento-da-plastica-report-accordo-globale-2020"},"modified":"2023-06-21T17:01:06","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T15:01:06","slug":"plastic-pollution-the-2020-report-of-the-new-plastics-economy-global-commitment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eticasgr.com\/en\/storie\/insights\/plastic-pollution-the-2020-report-of-the-new-plastics-economy-global-commitment","title":{"rendered":"Plastic pollution: the 2020 report of the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Plastic pollution:<\/strong> <strong>a global agreement<\/strong> \u2013 the <strong>New Plastics Economy Global Commitment<\/strong> \u2013 supported by Etica Funds and hundreds of entities including businesses, public bodies, associations and NGOs, calls on all stakeholders to reduce plastic packaging and eliminate the problem at source.<\/p>\n<p>In early November, two years\u00a0after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eticasgr.com\/en\/storie\/insights\/plastic-pollution-etica-sgr-on-the-front-line\">the signing of the agreement<\/a> , the second annual \u201c<strong>New Plastics Economy Global Commitment 2020 progress report<\/strong>\u201d was published.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Plastic pollution numbers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Researchers estimate that more than 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic have been produced since the 1950s. About 60% of this amount has ended up in landfills or, even worse, in the environment.<\/p>\n<p>More than 99% of plastic is made from chemicals derived from oil, natural gas and coal \u2013 all non-renewable resources. At this rate, by 2050, a 20% portion of world oil consumption could go into manufacturing plastics \u2013 much of this material is then released into the environment.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"responsive-embed widescreen\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aTcMPy6L88E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen> frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/p>\n<h2><strong>A commitment by 400 organizations against plastic pollution<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>By signing up in 2018, the organizations pledged to <strong>implement actions <\/strong>to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>eliminate plastic packaging<\/strong> when problematic and unnecessary;<\/li>\n<li>innovate the production process <strong>by ensuring that all plastic packaging is 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>UNEP and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation thus aim to build a common vision of a <strong>circular economy <\/strong>to help\u00a0<strong>reduce plastic pollution<\/strong>\u00a0and safeguard our oceans.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The goals of the Global Commitment<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>goals<\/strong> introduced in the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment are scheduled to be<strong> reviewed every 18 months<\/strong> and shall become increasingly ambitious. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation and UNEP have established three pillars.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Eliminate<\/strong> all problematic and non-essential plastic packaging by switching from single-use to reusable packaging models.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Innovate<\/strong>\u00a0to ensure that by 2025, all plastic packaging can be safely reused, recycled or composted.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make<\/strong> the plastics economy <strong>circular<\/strong> by significantly increasing the amount of reused or regenerated material in new products<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-31749 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.eticasgr.com\/app\/uploads\/2020\/11\/plastica-isola-oceano.jpg\" alt=\"Plastic pollution: the 2020 report of the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eticasgr.com\/app\/uploads\/2020\/11\/plastica-isola-oceano.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.eticasgr.com\/app\/uploads\/2020\/11\/plastica-isola-oceano-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eticasgr.com\/app\/uploads\/2020\/11\/plastica-isola-oceano-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eticasgr.com\/app\/uploads\/2020\/11\/plastica-isola-oceano-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eticasgr.com\/app\/uploads\/2020\/11\/plastica-isola-oceano-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.eticasgr.com\/app\/uploads\/2020\/11\/plastica-isola-oceano-800x533.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Two years after the first results of the global agreement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The report, published two years after the signing of the commitment, shows <strong>significant progress in two key areas<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the use of recycled content in plastic packaging<\/li>\n<li>the gradual elimination of components commonly identified as problematic, such as PS and PVC packaging, undetectable carbon pigments, and single-use plastic bags and straws<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the other hand,\u00a0<strong>limited progress has been made in increasing the recyclability of plastic packaging, reducing single-use packaging and switching to reusable packaging.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Significant differences were also detected in progress made by the various Global Commitment signatories: some countries have taken great strides forward, but others have made little or no progress towards agreed targets.<\/p>\n<p>The report highlights the various degrees of progress made by companies, public bodies, associations and NGOs but asserts that\u00a0<strong>efforts must be stepped up to reach the 2025 targets<\/strong>.
